THE Relationship Deep Dive: Alex Turner & Alexa Chung
Let's take a trip down memory lane!
Now, I know what you might be thinking – “Why should I care about this totally inconsequential relationship that doesn’t affect me in the slightest and happened like 10 to 15 years ago?” Trust me, I get it. However, take a chance and let me convince you otherwise. Because if one thing’s for certain, it’s that 2023 could really use a bit of Tumblr nostalgia.
Our journey begins in 2007, more specifically, that very April. But before we get into the story of how the two met, let’s have a look at both of their individual lives prior to that first. After she was scouted at Reading Festival at age sixteen, Alexa Chung modelled for a multitude of brands and magazines until she quit due to developing a distorted body image a few years in. From then on, Alexa started looking into different entertainment and journalism areas and ultimately found a liking for TV presenting. In April 2006 she began co-hosting Popworld on Channel 4 and continued doing so until its cancellation the following year. As for Alex Turner – following his band's massive success with their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not in 2006, Arctic Monkeys would go on to release their second studio record Favourite Worst Nightmare in April 2007 with a similar reception.
Now that the foundation is set, we can finally get into the interesting part, aka their relationship and how it came to be. It was Coachella weekend in late April 2007. Arctic Monkeys performed that Friday to a crowd of festival-goers, and Alexa was in attendance. Though there are no pictures of the two together, it is widely speculated that this might have been their first meeting. For reference, Alex would have been 21 years old, whereas Alexa was 23. Both of these photographs were taken that weekend.
Their assured “first” interaction and resulting romantic rumours came around merely two and a half months later in early July during T in the Park in Scotland. Alex was headlining the music festival with his band yet again, and Alexa acted as an attendee – note that the mention of music festivals is going to become a frequent factor in this relationship. There were once more no shared pictures of the two. However, people spotted them hanging out backstage all weekend, with Alex supposedly suggesting to Alexa that he’d teach her how to play the acoustic guitar in his trailer – so there’s that. Safe to say, speculations on a possible relationship were spreading left and right.
They obviously started hanging out more frequently after that as group photos featuring the two from the following September started emerging. Nonetheless, still no clear signs of a romantic relationship, as continuously speculated.
From their side there wasn’t any testimony given regarding these rumours – that is until the 8th of October 2007. At the Q Awards, Arctic Monkeys were named the “Best Band in the World Today” and following the ceremony, Alex apparently insisted on meeting Alexa instead of joining his bandmates for dinner. A while later, the pair walked into the bar hand in hand, prompting us with their very first real couple pic (of many more to come) and therefore officially confirming the whispers. So, there we have it, the early stages of a legendary and at times chaotic romance.
Apart from presenting on TV, Alexa Chung additionally enjoyed writing for different outlets, which is a piece of information that will also come into play later on. In October 2007 she began doing a monthly column for the British magazine Company. After their first public appearance, Alex and Alexa were spotted together more regularly for the remaining part of the year. As pictured below, these occasions included nights out in London’s clubs, as well as an Amy Winehouse gig in November 2007.
With that, we wrap up 2007 and head into the new year – and let me tell you, 2008 was one for the history books. Why? Because February started off with a bang. Does a certain letter ring any bells? That’s right, this was the year that Alex Turner’s written declaration of love was made available to the public and had the entirety of Tumblr in a chokehold. Though Alexa later cleared up that the published piece wasn’t a mere love letter, but instead part of a Valentine’s Day card addressed to the then 24-year-old. In an interview, she admitted that the card was accidentally left behind in a bar, resulting in it being sold to a media outlet.
“Alexa Chung: There was a really upsetting one when Alex had written me a Valentine card and I had accidentally left it in a bar. And someone sold it to the Sun and then they printed it, and they changed it so it didn't look like a Valentine card, and they just said it was a love letter. They slated him for being really soppy. Look, it's my boyfriend and it's Alex. Of course it's gonna be written like a story.
Interviewer: Was he peeved?
Alexa Chung: He was really cool with it, and he said, 'I'm not upset that everyone saw it because that's the truth and I couldn't give a shit.' And then he went [Chung dons a comedy northern accent], 'Eh, but at least you've got a copy of it now, eh?'”
That same month, Alexa accompanied Alex to the NME Awards – and apparently puked on him shortly before he went on stage to accept his prize, but I digress. Sometime around here (judging solely from hairstyles to be fair) we also get our first clothing swap as seen below. I’m not exactly sure when these separate interviews were recorded, but Alexa was obviously wearing Alex’s striped jumper in the second picture, so there’s that.
All throughout 2008 they were making a lot of public appearances as a pair. Out clubbing, getting ice cream on the street or happily attending one of the many festivals that year – the two obviously enjoyed each other’s company quite a bit during that particular time of the relationship. That summer they were pictured at Glastonbury, Leeds and Wireless Festival – only to name a few.
This year Alex also focussed on his side project The Last Shadow Puppets, a supergroup consisting of the then 22-year-old and Miles Kane, who is a good friend of both Alex as well as Alexa. Their album The Age of the Understatement was released in April 2008 and went straight to number one in the UK Charts. In fact, if you haven’t listened to it yet, you’re missing out big time! That September, the music video for their song My Mistakes Were Made For You was released and Alexa was featured in it. The clip pictured the couple in a car crash.
Moving on to October 2008. The Times published an article called “A Life in the Day: Alexa Chung”. As the title suggests, Alexa talked about a usual day in her life and mentioned Alex multiple times. She also shared that the two were living together in East London by then. Prepare for a fairly long excerpt – I tried to cut it down merely to the portions about Alex. It’s quite cute though and paints a pretty picture of their relationship at that point in time in my opinion.
„The 24-year-old former model landed her first TV job two years ago. Now she presents Freshly Squeezed and Frock Me for C4. She lives with her boyfriend, the Arctic Monkeys frontman, Alex Turner, in east London. I naturally wake up early, maybe 9am, and the first thing I do is kiss my boyfriend. I've just moved into a really sweet house with Alex. He's a very neat, clean boy and I'm a really messy girl. My clothes are strewn everywhere. I have so many, it's disgusting. “
“At the end of the day Alexander picks me up in Floyd, the Mini, and we usually go to the cinema. I love Alex, he's the most affable person ever. But then, what's there to be grumpy about? He's got the nicest life. He's young, he's in a great band and he's living with me! I get 15 invitations a week to go to parties and premieres. Mostly, I don't go to them, I meet friends at Bungalow 8 instead. “
“I'm going to have the nicest house – I'm planning it all in my head. Alex and I have just moved in, so we seem not to have the right things. We lack a masher, sieve, colander... Once I've got all that, may the cooking commence! In the meantime the pub across the road does great food or we get a pizza in. I get very tired – I like to say I'm broken by work. If we're out I'm always the party pooper. I like to be in bed by 10pm. Sometimes I take my computer, which isn't very sexy, is it? I'm obsessed with Facebook. Alex and I like to chill out to a record – Burt Bacharach or Roy Orbison – and we fall asleep with our arms round each other. He's really little and so am I, so no one gets a dead arm. Sometimes we wake up in the same position. It's the best thing ever. “ – The Times
Together with Miles Kane, Alex gave multiple concerts that year following the success of their album. Alexa was there to support him as seen in this picture taken right after the final The Last Shadow Puppets gig on November 3rd, in LA.
Additionally, in November, Alexa began writing another weekly column for The Independent as well as slowly getting back into modelling. In mid-November, the two returned to London and attend Pixie Geldof’s Christmas party the following month. Around this time, Alex was also photographed wearing a t-shirt with an illustration of Alexa on it, which was designed by Henry Holland.
At the very end of the year, Vanity Fair asked Alexa about her plans for New Year’s Eve. She responded:
“I will be spending New Year's Eve with my boyfriend [Alex Turner]'s band [the Arctic Monkeys] and all the girlfriends in Sydney, Australia. I'm toying with the idea of D. J.-ing that night, but perhaps it would be better to enjoy a barbeque on the beach. Either way, fireworks need to be featured heavily. “
And with that, we end the year. Now let’s get into 2009. First things first, it’s important to mention that Arctic Monkeys were actively working together again to put out a new album in August of that year. They played a few shows in New Zealand and Australia in January and therefore kicked off their new era. After completing their January shows, the band took the time to make some finishing touches on their third studio record. In February, the pair attended multiple ceremonies such as the Brit Awards, as well as the NME Awards together. Alexa also won both Elle’s as well as Glamour’s awards for “Best TV Presenter” that year. On top of that, she was made a contributing editor for British Vogue.
Now comes a rather monumental moment in the timeline. In April 2009 Alexa Chung announced that she would be moving to New York City to further pursue a career in TV in the US. Shortly thereafter, Alex Turner stated that he’d be joining her in order to not be apart. This might have caused some tension within the band, as the process of creating new music would be a bit harder long-distance – all alleged, obviously.
By June, Alexa got her own MTV show It’s On With Alexa Chung. In one of the episodes, she wore a shirt by the band The Horrors, which will come back later down the line.
The next month, in July 2009, Alex and Alexa were photographed at the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon studios. A few days later, Alex’s parents visited the couple in New York, where they took family pictures together.
The Arctic Monkeys tour resumed near the end of July and Alexa attended multiple shows either backstage or in the crowd to show her support.
Also, around this time (judging by the hairstyle once more) Alex wore the same illustrated Henry Holland t-shirt from a year prior to an Arctic Monkeys gig.
On the 21st of August Humbug, Arctic Monkeys’ third studio album was released. It featured the song Fire And The Thud, which very clearly refers to Alexa and their move to New York City. In an interview with Mojo he calls it “the most honest song on the album”. Lyrics of the song include:
“But if it’s true you’re gonna run away
Tell me where, I’ll meet you there.”
and
“The day after you stole my heart
Everything I touched told me it would be better shared with you, with you.”
That summer and autumn, the two of them continued attending US festivals and going out. They were photographed at All Points West as well as the ACL Festival.
Arctic Monkeys continued touring for the rest of the year (and would go on to do so until April 2010) and even performed live on It’s On With Alexa Chung, however, Alex and Alexa returned to London in December to celebrate Christmas in the UK. And that’s a wrap for 2009.
2010 started with Mulberry launching the Alexa Bag dedicated to the then 26-year-old. For the special occasion, she hosted a dinner with Mulberry that February and attended the event together with Alex.
Also in February 2010, she worked together with Vogue to upload one outfit a day to the old Vogue website for the entirety of the month. In one of her posts, Alexa mentioned wearing her boyfriend’s aka Alex’s jumper as seen below.
In April 2010 Alexa returned to British TV with a second season of Frock Me – a fashion and music series co-hosted by Henry Holland and Gemma Cairney. That same month, Arctic Monkeys finished their Humbug tour and Alex directly began writing new music. Shortly thereafter, they went to Coachella.
In May, Jamie (from Arctic Monkeys) apparently visited Alex in New York City to write some guitar parts for their next album Suck It And See which Alex already worked on the month prior. It’s important to note that the writing process of these songs was obviously going on while the relationship was in a very good place still. In June the couple still frequently went out in New York as seen in these photos.
Cue to the 23rd of June, when Alex and Alexa returned to the UK for the upcoming Glastonbury Festival and these iconic pictures were taken at London Heathrow Airport.
During his time in Brooklyn, Alex wasn’t only working on his Arctic Monkeys record but also wrote six songs for the acoustic soundtrack of the movie Submarine which was to be released that following September. At this stage of his life, he seemed to be very keen on writing love songs and ballads.
In early October Alexa gave an interview to The Guardian in which she stated that the two of them moved back to London two weeks prior due to her hosting the show Gonzo and the band putting together their fourth album (which would be recorded in LA sometime later). She also addressed the hate she received from some fans of AM and Alex Turner’s reaction to it.
„How does her boyfriend react when people write horrible things about her on the internet? "He's really good at just levelling me out and saying, 'You do realise just how ridiculous that is?' And then I go, 'Yeah, good point.'“ – The Guardian
For Halloween, the two of them were photographed in matching costumes and just a week later Alexa had a party for her 27th birthday in November. Tumblr history was made once again when those pictures were taken.
As we are approaching the final year of their relationship (spoiler alert!) rumours were emerging that Alex was allegedly thinking of proposing. However, the sources can in no way be deemed credible, so this info is once more to be taken with a grain of salt.
Now on to their final year, 2011. (Though their relationship would come to an end in 2011, this is definitely not where the deep dive ends, as there is yet so much more to come. So, buckle in) This is the year when Alex began to change a bit as it seems. His voice got a lot deeper, he seemed more grown up and confident altogether and showed the first signs of putting on a persona which further intensified in the years to come.
Anyways, over the course of five weeks, Arctic Monkeys recorded their fourth studio album Suck It And See in Los Angeles during January and February of 2011. Meanwhile, Alexa co-hosted the Golden Globe Arrivals Special on the 16th of January. In March 2011 the band teased SIAS on their website and announced its release for June of that year. Matt and Nick (from Arctic Monkeys) joined Alexa on her TV show Gonzo in April to talk about the new album – they all seemed to get along extremely well.
Later that month the band went back to touring. Note, however, that during these first few months of 2011, Alex and Alexa weren’t spotted out together very often anymore. Near the end of May, Arctic Monkeys performed in New York City and that is where we got the last real couple pictures of the two – on the 24th and 25th to be more precise.
In June, the new album got released and Alexa was seen out on the street wearing an Arctic Monkeys t-shirt.
As mentioned before, Suck It And See felt more like a love rather than a breakup album, despite the couple obviously having had a bit of trouble these days – remember however, that most of the songs were written the previous summer and autumn when the situation still appeared way differently (at least from what we were able to see from an outsider’s perspective). As with the album before, Suck It And See also contained multiple songs speculated to be about Alexa – most notably She’s Thunderstorms and Love is a Laserquest. In an album rundown Alex explained the origins of She’s Thunderstorms to NME as follows:
„I remember writing this one when there was a storm going on. They get like mad storms over there [in New York], like, apocalyptic. I'm always trying to think of different interesting ways to like describe somebody but compliment them too. So in that one, I like the idea that she's not even a thunderstorm, she's more than one. I quite like the fact she's plural. 'Thunderstorms' meaning just, y'know, awesome! “ – Alex Turner to NME
In yet another interview with Q Magazine, he discussed the inspiration for the song Love is a Laserquest and mentioned the following:
„Q magazine asked Turner if the song is about his girlfriend TV presenter and model Alexa Chung? He replied: "I hope not, cos in the song it's over."“ – Alex Turner to Q Magazine
That same June a conversation between Alexa Chung and Vogue was released.
Apparently, they were already having quite a few relationship problems during this period in time, though, according to concert-goers, Alexa was in the crowd at Arctic Monkeys’ Sheffield show in June having a good time. No pictures to back that up, however. On the 25th of June 2011, both of them attended Glastonbury Festival and allegedly didn’t really talk over the course of the entire weekend.
Following up on that came the next unfortunate sighting. In early July Alexa was presenting the iTunes Festival in London all while Arctic Monkeys were performing at the very same event. Kind of on brand for this stage in their relationship though, attendees reported that the couple wasn’t seen together off-stage. I think you can guess what happened next.
In late July their split was officially announced due to “different schedules and in an order to save their friendship”. On the 30th of July it was reported that:
„Alexa, 27, has moved out of the apartment they shared in Williamsburg, New York, while 25-year-old Alex is on a world tour with the Arctic Monkeys until January.
'Alexa has moved all her stuff out and is concentrating on getting her American TV career back on track,' says a source.
'Alex has gigs in America next month, but none of them are on the East Coast.
'Then he is planning a UK tour. They are very busy and have grown apart but want to keep the news quiet.'
Alexa's spokesperson said: 'Sadly Alexa and Alex have split, although they remain close. “ – Daily Mail
Now it gets a little weird. Anyways, in the days following, Alex was looking quite distressed when performing She’s Thunderstorms live and on October 3rd at a gig in Houston he wore the very same The Horrors t-shirt Alexa sported in an episode of It’s On With Alexa Chung back in 2009, remember?

But then almost immediately after that, he started dating Arielle Vandenberg, an American actress and model from Los Angeles. There were also speculations that they had already moved in together as Alex relocated to California around that time. From here on his persona act really intensified. And as I’ve mentioned before Arctic Monkeys were recording Suck It And See in LA in January and February of that year. Naturally, cheating rumours emerged, however, nothing was ever confirmed.
In September, Alex and Arielle were seen out as a couple more frequently all while Alexa remained rather quiet.
In October 2011 however, Alexa graced the cover of both Harper’s Bazaar UK as well as its Australian issue. In both cover stories, there was a mention of Alex and their relationship. Note, that these interviews must have been held a couple of months prior to its release and therefore before their breakup. Harper’s Bazaar Australia acknowledged the split briefly and wrote:
“Chung has a history of dating band boys. She has just split from her boyfriend since July 2007, Alex Turner, the frontman of English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. “ – Harper’s Bazaar Australia
In the British issue though, she talked very fondly of Alex suggesting that she might have been rather optimistic about the future of the relationship still despite their troubles – all speculations of course. Interestingly she also compared him to George Harrison here, which will come up a little down the line once more.
„[Alexa Chung's] own fantasy Sixties existence would be dating George Harrison. "Because he looks so much like Alex [Turner], I think. I love those pictures of him shot on the beach, where he's got that little cap on." [This interview took place before the couple's break-up]“ – Harper‘s Bazaar UK
Near the end of the year, Alexa furthermore stated that she’d be returning to New York City once more, already having purchased a place over there. Though there were a few rumours regarding short flings, her next “serious” relationship would only come around in 2015 with Alexander Skarsgård. They really like names beginning with an A, I guess. Anyways, that’s a wrap on 2011 – a year I honestly don’t feel the need to revisit again after all that tumultuous info.
Now, 2012 wasn’t too eventful regarding their relationship. Alex remained with Arielle throughout the year – in fact, his band relocated to LA with him that year. And as for Alexa, she started writing her book set to be released the following year. But more on that in the next chapter.
Okay, we’ve made it to 2013. To keep it as brief as possible I’m going to start out in September of that year because multiple things happened here. First of all, Alexa released It, the book I was talking about earlier. It featured a chapter on Alex and heartbreak as well as this mention of her ex-boyfriend’s jumper. Note, that only the text portion was included in It, the two pictures below are only speculations in reference.
In addition, the book featured a chapter on George Harrison and his fashion influence. That same month she also talked to The Guardian about the book and commented on her break-up to a great extent. It reads as follows:
“The longest section is about how to cope with heartbreak. So, I say, shall we talk about heartbreak?
"I'm not heartbroken anymore, but I definitely was when I wrote it [last year]," she says hastily.
Who caused the heartbreak?
"It was various people. There was one big thing, and then there were various ill-advised flings I had to get over him, so yeah," she replies.
"Him", as all Alexa fans know, is Alex Turner, lead singer of Arctic Monkeys and Chung's boyfriend for four years until their split in 2011.
I tell her my theory about heartbreak: that it takes half the amount of time you were with someone to get over them, and she nods a little sadly. "Yeah, I'd agree with that. But is this gross to talk about? I feel he wouldn't talk about it. I don't know how relevant it is now, whereas if you asked me at the time, 'How you doing?' No one even asked... But I don't know whether to be open and vulnerable about it and say, 'I had a shit time', or to be quiet. What do you think?"
It's up to you, I say. But I guess it might be healthy for your younger female fans to know that your life is not always perfect, despite what the photos suggest.
She barks with laughter at the suggestion that her life might be perfect. "But I don't want to imply he broke my heart. I was grieving for the loss of something." She later elaborates on her reluctance to talk about the relationship saying, "I know how the media does that whole 'poor her' thing, like they did with Jennifer Aniston - not that I'm comparing myself to her, of course - but do you see what I mean?"
Yet, typically, Chung can't help herself and carries on. "I'm grateful for the experience of that shit time, and for being on my own. I'd never really been on my own before - I'd always gone from one relationship to the next - so I had to learn all this stupid stuff. Like, how do I work my fucking TV? And now there isn't a dude to tell me how to put up the blinds. But it's good to learn how to work your way round a drill."
She and "Al", as she calls him, are still friends. "Oh yeah, he's my best friend," she says quietly. “ – The Guardian
As for that last part of the interview: not sure if that comment on him being her best friend still was to be taken seriously or sarcasm.
We’re still in September, I know it’s a long one, but this is the month in which Arctic Monkeys’ fifth studio album AM was released. Two takeaways: Firstly, Arielle made an appearance in the R U Mine? music video, meaning they were still dating around this time. Second, the record featured a song called Knee Socks speculated to be about Alexa. More on that later.
2014, the year when things were starting to get interesting again. From here on we’re really stepping into theorizing territory and it’s going to get a bit crazy. For what’s about to come I really want to thank Tumblr and its posts from like 9 years ago – I couldn’t have done it without you.
So, supposedly Alex and Arielle broke up around late January of 2014. In early February Alexa hung out with Katie Cook (who is the wife of Jamie aka Alex’s bandmate) and other friends in New York. Nothing too out of the ordinary though since they were pals. That same day she posted a picture of The Beatles to her Instagram. The very next day Arctic Monkeys performed in New York and Alex covered All My Loving by The Beatles at his gig featuring Miles Kane. I know I know, this is a reach, but I don’t care. Again, the next day Alex, Alexa and Miles Kane were supposedly seen hanging out in a bar in NYC. Granted, they did say in their split announcement that they’d remain friends. I think it’s still worth mentioning though since they weren’t spotted hanging out the years prior to that and obviously there’s still some stuff to come.
On the 10th of May, both of them were present at the wedding party of Poppy Delevigne and James Cook. On the 24th of May Alexa’s brother posted a picture to his Instagram attending the Arctic Monkeys show in London. On the 31st of May, the two of them were taking part in the wedding of Jamie and Katie Cook in Italy.
On June 2nd Alex, Alexa and Nick (Alex’s bandmate) were all spotted together at Heathrow Airport in London by multiple fans. One of them took a picture with Alex and elaborated in the comments in response to questions about Alexa:
Okay, now we can’t simply trust a random comment on the internet but I’m still including it to prove my point, and no one can stop me, alright? Anyways, moving on.
On the 18th of June Alex had a gig in NYC (where Alexa obviously lived during that period in time). Two days later pictures emerged that showed the two of them hanging out in front of a hotel in New York – to the public, it’s their first known photographed meeting ever since their break-up in 2011, I believe.
YES, they could have simply been friends but it’s not benefiting my narrative so I’m going to ignore that option. Thank you very much. Next up, Alexa appeared on the cover of Glamour UK’s July issue. In its accompanying cover story, they eluted to the fact, that Alexa was dating someone.
On July 7th she made a tweet in relation to Love is a Laserquest, the Arctic Monkeys song supposedly about her.
The 30th of July rolled around. Literally exactly three years after their split announcement, Alexa was seen wearing an Arctic Monkeys shirt out on the street. Do with that information what you will.
However, from here on it gets a bit weird once again because following that journey, nothing really came from it. There weren’t any other pictures of the two suggesting they’d be back together. In fact, in 2015 both of them started new relationships, respectfully. Alex began dating Taylor Bagley and Alexa moved on to Alexander Skarsgård as mentioned before. So maybe the initial comments on them remaining friends might have been true after all. I guess we’ll never know what happened during those few months.
In 2016 we really only have a minor notion as they were both photographed wearing the same shirt that year. That really wasn’t anything out of the ordinary though since The Deep End Club aka the creative and activist collective that designed the shirt was launched by Tennesse Thomas, a good friend of Alexa’s.
By July of 2017, Alexa Chung and Alexander Skarsgård announced their break-up and a few months later in November, there were rumours that Alex and Alexa were seen kissing in London. However, Alex would have still been dating Taylor at this point in time and nothing ever came from it, so I really don’t think that these claims can be seen as credible.
In the years following Alexa has time and time again liked and commented on posts of Alex (who doesn’t have an official account) and Arctic Monkeys shared by friends and different sites as pictured below. So, they seem to be friendly these days.
The very final stop in this long, long journey is going to be Alexa’s video for British Vogue’s YouTube channel in July 2022. In “Alexa Chung Breaks down 20 Memorable Looks from 1992 to Now” the at that time 38-year-old took a look at her Glastonbury outfit from 2008 aka shorts, a striped shirt, a leather jacket and most importantly knee socks. Her comment from the clip reads as follows:
“I think around this time in my life, I really enjoyed the role-play of being like a band girlfriend. “
“I think I thought that knee socks were really sexy, looking at them now… they’re pretty junior, aren’t they? “
I’m not quite sure if that can be seen as solid evidence to prove that the 2013 song Knee Socks is in fact about her, but I’m taking it as such, and no one can stop me.
As of 2023 both Alex as well as Alexa are in committed relationships with Alex dating Louise Verneuil and Alexa having been linked to Tom Sturridge. But who knows what the future will bring?
